There are dozens of affordable local providers, ranging from campsites to B&Bs and hotels (see www.rhayader.co.uk for a full list). All are child-friendly and most are happy to take dogs. Here are a few suggestions:

Camp at Daniel’s

£10 per person. Basic shared amenities: shared shower and compost loo, water filling available. Raised fire pits allowed at own risk. Please pre-book camping with Daniel.

Rhoslyn Retreats (https://rhosllynretreats.co.uk/) Cottages next door to Daniel. Takes up to 8 people and has a hot tub.

Mid Wales Holiday Lets 07843 477890 – www.midwalesholidaylets.co.uk) have a range of self-catering flats in Rhayader.

Ric and Pippa (01597 810792 – www.airbnb.co.uk/rooms/4095296) are a lovely couple of ‘shroomers who welcome fellow enthusiasts to stay in their spare rooms in the Elan Valley.

The Metropole (01597 823700 – www.metropole.co.uk) is an Edwardian hotel situated 10 miles from Rhayader and owned by a fellow mushroom-fanatic.

Beili Neuadd (01597 810211 – www.midwalesfarmstay.co.uk) is a B&B located just outside Rhayader in good mushroom territory.

Nannerth Country Holidays (01597 811121 – www.nannerth.co.uk) has a range of award-winning self-catering apartments in its farm outbuildings near Rhayader.

Welsh Country Holidays (UPDATE) has a range of 23 beautiful cottages and conversions set in spectacular Mid-Wales countryside.

Elan Oaks (01597 810326 - www.elanoaks.co.uk) a tranquil caravan and camp site two miles out of Rhayader in the heart of mushroom country.

The Old Vicarage Dolfor (01686 629051 – www.theoldvicaragedolfor.co.uk) is an award-winning five star guesthouse and licensed restaurant offering local organic produce.

Maesglas Uchaf (01974 282571 – www.stayinwales.co.uk/detail.cfm?i=7506) has all the comforts of a modern house and is situated on the western side of the Cambrian Mountains, halfway between Aberystwyth and Rhayader.

Camping, Caravanning + Tipi (01597 870081 – www.campingmidwales.co.uk) gets you closer to nature and is only a couple of miles from our starting point.

Tynrhyd (01267 667604 – www.tynrhyd.com) is a family-run, 5* self-catering, barn conversion near Devil’s Bridge (about 30 minutes drive from Rhayader).

Travel

  • Driving is best as local buses are not available.

  • Nearest Train station: LLandrindod (15 minute drive).

  • Sometimes pick ups from Llandrindod can be arranged for £5 each way before and after, please pre-book lifts well in advance.
